Taking supplements is okay! Let me say first, they’re to be used to SUPPLEMENT your diet, not used in place of food . BUT taking supplements doesn’t mean:
- You’ve failed
- Your diet is unbalanced
- Your plant-based diet is deficient (B12 for another day)
In fact, many people are “low” in something, it’s not uncommon no matter what diet you follow. For me, it’s Vitamin D. It has been low since long before becoming plant-based and in just the past few years I’ve worked hard to consistently supplement and successfully bring it up!
It’s important to get routine blood-work done to see if you’re deficient or low in anything.
From there, you can start increasing certain whole foods and in some cases, you may need to take supplements…AND THAT’S OKAY! Look at this post to see what supplements you might need to consider, and of course always talk to your doctor or dietitian/nutritionist to help guide you and recommend a reliable brand.
Eating more plants can come with its challenges. There’s a lot of nutrition noise out there, everyone has an opinion, and it can be confusing to figure out what works best for YOU. Working through these challenges and learning how to easily incorporate more plant-based foods into your diet and lifestyle can be helpful. Working with a plant-based dietitian to guide you through your unique journey and surrounding yourself with other like-minded people who are on a similar journey can be monumental.
